The Five Most Disappointing Games of Fall 2011
We were excited! We were optimistic! We were wrong.
US, November 22, 2011
But what about the games that didn't do as well? What of those that we seemed oh-so excited for just a few months back, but which fell short of our high standards?
As every gamer knows, first impressions of a game can be deceptive, and the games that seemed exciting after a fifteen minute preview demo, sometimes are less so after a thorough ten hour review. So, sadder and wiser, we present the games of fall that disappointed our editors.
Here are the five games we wanted to absolutely love this fall but which didn't match our hopes and expectations.
X-Men: Destiny
X-Men Destiny held a world of promise. Much vaunted developer Silicon Knights was working on the game; X-Men RPGs had been great in the past; and we finally got to be our own mutant. Alas, it was to be one of the year's least memorable experiences. Spider-Man: Edge of Time
After Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man was back, and Edge of Time looked like it was going to continue a trend of great games bursting with quality. But somehow it all went horribly wrong. Need for Speed: The Run
There's a lot to like in Need for Speed: The Run, but, as much as the developer touted the big storyline, that was the part of the game that really let us down. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
Around E3 time, we were looking at this game with undisguised glee. The fervent hope was that developer Snowblind could deliver an experience on a par with its Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance classic, and that publisher Warner would do justice to this licence, as it has with Batman. A 7.0 isn't too shabby a score, but we were really looking for a 9.0 or higher. Kirby's Return to Dreamland
So, 7.5 is a reasonably good score for any game, but for a Nintendo first party game, based on one of its best-loved franchises, it just isn't good enough. We were disappointed that Kirby failed to ignite our passions, and became one of 2011's also-ran games. A missed opportunity. So which games didn't live up to your expectations? Anything you were excited about in the previews that ultimately disappointed you?
